Empowering Young Lives: The Impact of the MoneyWise Program

In the ever-changing landscape of personal finance, it is crucial to equip young individuals with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate their financial futures successfully. One organisation, supported by The Cherry Family Foundation this year, Teen Action, has taken up this challenge with their groundbreaking program, MoneyWise. We delve into the details and the remarkable impact of this program, which has left a lasting impression on the lives of its participants.

A Journey of Transformation: The MoneyWise program kicked off in June 2022, embarking on a 40-week journey of discovery and empowerment. The program concluded in April 2023, and the results were nothing short of extraordinary. Participants were not only provided with invaluable financial education, but they also received the opportunity to connect with experienced volunteers who would continue to offer guidance and support as they transitioned to independence and self-sufficiency.

Creating an Engaging Learning Environment: Teen Action left no stone unturned when it came to delivering the MoneyWise program. Sessions were meticulously planned to be both interesting and stimulating, ensuring that participants remained fully engaged throughout. The sessions were led by Ms. Claire Friedlander, a highly motivated tutor with a background in the financial sector. With her expertise, she brought the subject matter to life through interactive classes, role-playing exercises, and practical applications.

A Holistic Approach to Financial Education: MoneyWise covered a wide range of topics, providing participants with a comprehensive understanding of personal finance. From opening different types of bank accounts and superior budgeting techniques to understanding the risks of excessive borrowing and the rewards of safe investments, the program left no stone unturned. Participants also gained knowledge about income, taxation, benefits, pensions, and various types of insurance. The feedback received from the Youth Advisory Group highlighted the importance of incorporating home management aspects, such as utilities management and document organisation, in future program designs.

Building Confidence and Reducing Stress: In the feedback forms, an overwhelming 96% of participants expressed increased confidence in financial terminology. More than 70% reported a significant reduction in stress levels related to managing their finances. Keeping an expenditure diary proved to be a valuable tool, with 87% agreeing that it helped them manage their finances more effectively and curb unnecessary spending. These outcomes are a testament to the success of the MoneyWise program in empowering young individuals to take control of their financial well-being.

Transforming Lives, One Story at a Time: Hindy, an 18-year-old participant from the impoverished borough of Hackney, shared her story of transformation. Coming from a financially disadvantaged background, she was apprehensive about her future. However, after learning about MoneyWise through a friend, Hindy decided to take charge of her financial destiny. Forty weeks later, she emerged as a changed person, equipped with the knowledge and skills to navigate independent living successfully. Hindy’s story is just one of many that exemplify the life-changing impact of the MoneyWise program.

Continued Support and Future Endeavours: Recognising the importance of ongoing support, 40 participants have signed up for the year-long mentoring program, ensuring they have guidance as they transition into independent living. Teen Action is committed to the sustainability of the MoneyWise program and plans to run it again, starting in winter 2023. The organisation has already received inquiries regarding autumn registration, highlighting the program’s reputation and demand within the community.

The MoneyWise program, pioneered by Teen Action, has proven to be a catalyst for change in the lives of young individuals. By providing essential financial education and continuous support, the program has empowered participants to break free from the cycle of unhealthy spending, reliance on government support, and the limitations imposed by financial hardship. Teen Action’s commitment to building financially healthy futures for young people is commendable.

The Cherry Family Foundation is proud to have supported their impactful work. Together, we can pave the way for a brighter and more financially secure future for all.
