Step by Step Kids: A Beacon of Hope and Support

The Genesis of a Visionary Charity

Founded in 1992 by Toby Walzer, a mother of two sons with autism, Step by Step Kids emerged from a need for more than the standard school day could offer. Toby’s initiative began with securing an early morning swimming session for her sons and other children like them, marking the birth of this innovative charity.

Rapid Growth and Community Support

The charity quickly resonated with other families facing similar challenges. Toby, alongside Mrs. Feigy Schisha, expanded the initiative to include a variety of sports and activities, providing vital stimulation for children with special needs during school closures and offering respite for their families.

Today’s Impact and Services

Fast forward to 2020, Step by Step Kids supports 220 families, standing as the only local special needs out-of-school Jewish charity. It caters to the cultural needs of the local Orthodox Jewish community, collaborates with local authorities, and is a preferred provider for Short Breaks. The centre operates every day, including after school, Shabbat, Jewish holidays, and school breaks, with programs tailored by age and ability.

The mission of Step by Step Kids is to ensure a happy, productive childhood for young people with disabilities and to support their families with necessary breaks. Their vision is a community where children and young adults with disabilities can enjoy a range of enriching experiences alongside their peers, supported by robust respite services.
